Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has been vocal about equal pay in the entertainment industry. The actor, who has appeared in several Indian and international projects, recently explained his upcoming show, Citadelthis is the first business where she is being paid the same amount as her husband.
“I might get into trouble for [saying this], it depends on the viewer,” Chopra told Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2023). “I’ve been working in theater for 22 years. , and I have done almost 70-plus episodes. and two TV shows. But when I did Citadel, it was the first time in my career that I found balance. I laugh at this, but it’s kind of nuts,” said the former Miss World.
The actor added, “I put in the same amount of investment and work, but I’m paid less. But it’s easy for Amazon Studios to say, ‘That’s what right, you’re the leader-leader, that’s right,’ and I was like, ‘You’re right, that’s right.’ And I wonder: Did that happen because there are few women making decisions in Hollywood? Would the conversation be different if a woman had not made that decision? These are not conversations that happen easily.”
In 2021, Chopra opened up about the one time she was asked to leave a film after raising the issue of equal pay. He recalled the situation where he had a conversation with different women of the brotherhood, they started to urge him to stand up for himself.
During an interview with the Skimm’d from the Couch podcast, Chopra, while explaining the incident, said that after he brought up the issue of his salary compared to his men, he was told by a film director on the set he can “take the pay, which is due” compared to the men in the cast, or he can leave.
