LIVERPOOL:
Virgil van Dijk says he is happy Liverpool’s new-look forward line after a 7-0 hammering of arch-rivals Manchester United.
Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, who arrived last January, scored twice at Anfield on Sunday while Mohamed Salah also scored twice.
With Roberto Firmino, another goal scorer, ready to go at the end of the season, only Salah remains from the famous front which also included Sadio Mane, who is in Bayern Munich.
Nunez has scored 14 goals this season while Gakpo has scored four since arriving from PSV Eindhoven.
Protect Van Dijk praised Liverpool’s “world class” performance at Anfield, describing Gakpo’s first goal as “awesome”.
“Obviously it’s a difficult time to come to any club, I think, in the winter for any player but he’s settled,” he said. “It’s a very difficult position to play in.
“Obviously he learns from one of the best, I think, every day with Bobby Firmino. He has to keep going, keep the belief, keep the belief and stick together.
“I think he will be good for this club and I’ve said it before but he’s a good player. Darwin always causes trouble with his pace, his passion and quality. “
Egypt international Salah scored his 128th and 129th Premier League goals for Liverpool to become the club’s top scorer in the competition.
Van Dijk said while beating their opponents to be happy, nobody is thinking about the result as Liverpool chase the top four after an inconsistent season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently fifth in the Premier League, three points behind Tottenham with a game in hand.
“We shouldn’t take these results for granted but there are many more games to play to get what we want – in this case it’s Champions League football and that’s what we focus on ,” said Van Dijk, the Netherlands captain.
“We shouldn’t waste it like any other day, we won 7-0 in a difficult season we’ve had, you have to stand and enjoy it.
“But the focus will shift and next week we go to Bournemouth. I think our focus is one game at a time and that won’t change.”
