MGM fight news Faith III took a hit in its opening weekend, earning an estimated $58.7 million to top the North American box office in one of the first big shows for a sports movie.
That made former director Michael B. Jordan — who also played rocker Apollo Creed — the “undefeated box office champion,” industry analysts say. Exhibitor Relations.
“This release is incredible,” said David Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. “Weekends like this are great news for the industry.”
In this ninth film in the Rock franchise – the first without Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky Balboa role he played – Creed came out of retirement for a dangerous match against an old friend played by Jonathan Majors.
That makes this week a good ending for Majors, the villain at Marvel and Disney’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ranked second for the Friday-Sunday period with $12.5 million. Paul Rudd stars as Ant; Evangeline Lilly is the Wasp.
In third place is Universal’s It’s Cocaine to $11 million. The horror comedy is based on the true story of a black bear who was mauled in the woods of Tennessee after ingesting a stray dose of cocaine. Keri Russell plays one of the locals who has been diagnosed with insanity.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — In the Swordsmith Village, an anime sequel from Crunchyroll, ranked fourth with $10.1 million. The premiere of “Demon Slayer” in 2021 had a first record for a non-English language category, earning $19.5 million, Differences reported.
And in the fifth is Lionsgate’s Christian drama Jesus Revolution, a story about a religious organization in 1960s California. It raised $8.7 million.
