ISTANBUL:
Jakob Ingebrigtsen traveled to 3,000m gold in the Champion in Europe on Sunday to complete the 1500m/3,000m double distance for the second time at these championships.
Olympic 1500m champion Ingebrigtsen was undeterred in Istanbul and set a Norwegian national record of 7min 40.32sec when she won the 1500m on Friday.
Adel Mechaal of Spain took silver in 7:41.75 and Elzan Bibic of Serbia took bronze in 7:44.03.
Ingebrigtsen repeated her record of two years ago when the championship was held in Torun, Poland.
“It felt like I ran myself today,” he said.
Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson won the women’s 800m, as the Olympic silver medalist won easily in 1:58.66 to retain the title she won two years ago.
Anita Horvat took the silver medal for Slovenia nearly two seconds behind while France’s Agnes Raharolahy collected the bronze.
Hodgkinson dedicated the win to his former coach Joseph Galvin, who died this week.
“This is definitely for him,” he said, holding up a banner bearing his name.
Hodgkinson’s impressive indoor performance this winter will serve as a boost as he turns his sights to the outdoor season and tries to beat U.S. Olympic champion Athing Mu. close to winning the outdoor world championship in Eugene last year.
“I’m going to have a few days off now and then get ready to chase some more wins. Yeah I’m excited for the summer,” he said.
The women’s long jump was a surprise as Great Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers achieved a final jump of 7.00m, the longest jump in the world this year, to take the gold medal in the competition which was just the fourth place is the Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany. and a best effort of 6.83m.
In other notable events, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh clinched the women’s high jump title with a winning clearance of 1.98m and France’s Kevin Mayer won the title. the heptathlon for the third time in these championships.
