LOS ANGELES:
Star Australia Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from next month’s ATP/WTA Indian Wells Masters after failing to recover from knee surgery, organizers said on Monday.
The world number 19 has not appeared in the tournament since playing in Tokyo last October after his run to the US Open quarter-finals last month.
The 27-year-old had knee surgery in January to repair a torn left meniscus after pulling out of the Australian Open.
Kygios’ manager, Daniel Horsfall, later described the operation as a “huge success” and revealed that the star was focused on returning to Indian Wells.
Kyrgios reached the quarter-finals at Indian Wells last season, losing in three sets to Rafael Nadal.
American media reports added on Monday that Kyrgios also withdrew from the Miami Open, which followed after Indian Wells.
Kyrgios, who reached Wimbledon last season, escaped prosecution earlier this month after pleading guilty in a Canberra court to assaulting his girlfriend Chiara Passari in early 2021.
