Lots of new Lord of the Rings film is coming from Warner Bros., the Hollywood studio behind Peter Jackson’s blockbuster Oscar-winning trilogy said Thursday.
David Zaslav, CEO of parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, told an earnings call that recently appointed studio executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy had reached an agreement to make more films by based on the nature books of JRR Tolkien.
“Today, I’m thrilled to announce that Mike and Pam have signed a deal to expand Lord of the Rings movies,” he said.Lord of the Rings it’s one of the most iconic stories of all time, and we’re so excited. Stay tuned for more to come.”
Zaslav did not provide further details, but Jackson said in a statement that AFP he and his colleagues were kept “in the loop every step of the way.” “We look forward to talking more with them to hear their vision for the franchise going forward,” said Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
No information has been given as to which stories or timelines from Tolkien’s many books will provide the source material for the new films. It will be produced by Warner’s New Line Cinema, which produced the original Jackson trilogy.
Rival studio Amazon last September released the first season of its own television adaptation, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. That series – a prequel to Lord of the Rings – is slated to run for five seasons, with a total budget of more than $1 billion. The first season of the Prime Video streaming platform was its most popular, with 25 million viewers on its first day, but received a lukewarm response from critics.
