MIAMI:
Seventh Taylor Fritz defeated Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday to win the ATP Delray Beach Open, securing the American’s future at the top of the world up five positions.
Fritz, already at the top of the world’s career ladder, will break into the top five on February 27, becoming the first American to do so since becoming world number one. Andy Roddick.
“This year has been amazing after losing in the first and second round every year I’ve been here,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier to come back and get this result.”
The 25-year-old Californian claimed his fourth ATP final and moved to 5-5 overall in singles tournament play.
Fritz’s tournament also includes last March in Indian Wells, this past June for his second championship in Eastbourne and last October in the Japan Open.
Top seed Fritz moved to 3-1 in tournament matches against Kecmanovic, after defeating her last year in Indian Wells and Miami.
Fritz dominated the opening set before Kecmanovic saved a match point and fought back to take the second set, which Fritz controlled until the fourth set. Serb’s result sent a backhand over match point to fall in less than two hours.
Fritz had 43 wins with 10 aces and dropped just two points to his first team.
