GENOA:
Inter Milan were allowed Naples to move 15 points clear at the top of Serie A after being held to a goalless draw by struggling Sampdoria on Monday.
Simone Inzaghi’s side have no hope of regaining the league title they conceded to local rivals AC Milan last season and the gap between them and Napoli widened after after a bad show in Genoa.
Napoli beat Cremonese 3-0 on Sunday and look every week to secure a first league crown since 1990.
Second-placed Inter are three points ahead of Atalanta, Roma and Milan in the race for the Champions League.
Lazio are five points back in sixth after being beaten by Atalanta in Rome on Saturday night.
When asked if the name is better than his team, Inzaghi said “I say we can see ourselves”.
“We are not satisfied with the result, in fact we are very disappointed as we should be.”
Inzaghi chose Romelu Lukaku along with Lautaro Martinez, the powerful partnership that won Inter the 2021 Scudetto.
But Lukaku was nowhere near the form that prompted Chelsea to pay a club-record fee for his services the following summer and the Belgian was replaced by Edin Dzeko midway through the second half. it has little effect.
Turkey’s midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu went close with a long-range effort at halftime as Inter fans stood in the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to honor those affected by the recent earthquake. hit his country and Syria.
More than 35,000 people have died in the earthquake and Calhanoglu appeared to break down in tears as supporters unfurled banners reading “closer to Turkey and Syria, Calha is one of us”.
The 29-year-old Calhanoglu wore a T-shirt with the message “Pray for Turkiye” during the pre-match warm-up.
“I thank my team, fans and the club for being close to me this time,” Calhanoglu told Sky after the match.
“We are trying to help our country in any way we can… The pictures we saw are painful, but life goes on and I hope people get out of this situation quickly.”
Monday’s result was a good result for struggling Samp but a point that doesn’t bode well for the survival hopes of a team in fourth. firmly in the exclusion zone.
Dejan Stankovic’s side have collected 11 points from their 22 games and are eight behind Spezia, who stay outside the drop and draw at Empoli on Saturday.
Verona are two points behind Spezia after their 1-0 win over Salerno on Monday.
